No amount of training can ever prepare anyone, including K-pop idols, for the backlash they may face simply for existing. If the scrutiny alone isn’t enough, they are also pressured to maintain a certain weight to appear presentable or “ideal” to their fans.
Soloist HyunA (김현아) has faced heavy criticism for a number of reasons, primarily her controversial marriage to former HIGHLIGHT/BEAST (하이라이트/비스트) member Yong Junhyung (용준형). She has also received significant hate over her weight gain during a recent airport appearance. In response, the singer decided to go on a diet, but unfortunately, it took a toll on her physical well-being. Here’s what happened:

HyunA was one of the artists performing at the Waterbomb Festival in Macau over the weekend. The former 4Minute member performed several of her hits, including “I’m Not Cool” and “Lip & Hip”. It was during her performance of “Bubble Pop” that the idol suddenly collapsed on stage. Her dancers immediately checked on her before security rushed to carry her off.
The moment quickly went viral, raising concerns among fans about her health. Many speculated that the collapse was due to her recent rapid weight loss, as she had updated fans that she now weighs around 49kg just days before the show. Others suggested it may have been caused by vasovagal syncope, a brief loss of consciousness triggered by a physical overreaction to certain stimuli, a condition she previously opened up about.

The same evening, HyunA took to Instagram to apologise for the shocking incident. “I’m truly, truly sorry… Although it was only a short time since my last performance, I wanted to show you a great performance, but I don’t feel like I managed to be professional, and to be honest, I don’t remember anything. I’ll try to build my stamina and consistently work hard in the future. It would be amazing if everything went the way I wanted it to, but I’ll try hard!” she wrote, reassuring fans that they have nothing to worry about and that she’s doing well.
