Had a bad breakup and mulling over unfriending your ex on Facebook? Or still not over that really bad breakup a year ago but you keep seeing the trail of your ex’s “new life” all over your news feed?
It’s like rubbing salt to wound, isn’t it?
Sure, you can hide him/her, unfriend them (if you have the heart to do so), or straight up block them (if you’re that angry), but is it enough to sever ties when you may still be tagged in his/her pictures or see his/her name pop up as a suggestion when you write a status update?
Never fear, Facebook’s new tools are here! Apparently, the social media giant is rolling out new tools which will have 3 major components:
- Limiting how much of your ex you see on Facebook
- Limiting how much your ex sees of you on Facebook
- Limiting people’s ability to see past posts of you and your ex
The new tools will pop up when you change your relationship status and make it “Facebook official”.
The tools are part of a test in the US on mobile, after which Facebook will make tweaks/changes before rolling them out further based on people’s feedback.
Facebook product manager Kelly Winters went on to explain:
Facebook is a place for sharing life’s important moments, which for many people include their romantic relationships. When a relationship ends, we’ve heard from people that they sometimes have questions about the options available to them on Facebook.
“This work is part of our ongoing effort to develop resources for people who may be going through difficult moments in their lives. We hope these tools will help people end relationships on Facebook with greater ease, comfort and sense of control,” she added.
All of these tools are optional and people will be able to access them in the help center anytime.
How convenient and considerate! Nice one, Facebook 🙂
