We will always be best remembered by the legacy we leave behind. And there is no denying the mark local icon Anne Ooi (黄秀兰), better known as “Aunty Bersih” has left on Malaysia’s history.
Since becoming an icon of Bersih, Anne Ooi has inspired so many others to follow in her footsteps, to stand up for what they believe is right for the sake of the country. As such, it was with great regret that her passing was announced today (26th February).
Like many others, the former English teacher had been moved to join the Bersih movement in 2009, braving tear gas and water cannons. A photo of her remaining stout through the barrage later became the defining image of the Bersih 2 rally and her determination and conviction endeared her to many.
Unfortunately, just this year, her family shared that her health had been failing and she required intensive care. It was later reported on 24th March that she had entered the ICU in a hospital in Australia, where she had been visiting family. However, the next day, her family shared that she would be taken off life support as she had been declared brain dead.
Anne Ooi passed away peacefully on 25th March at age 78, surrounded by her family and loved ones. Her daughter shared they had held her till the very end, while singing and talking to her. As her son later said: “It was what she waited all her life for, and knowing that gave us a sense of calm and happiness.”
There has since been an outpouring of love and condolences messages from netizens for “Aunty Bersih”. As many said: “You will always be fondly remembered as the nation’s Bersih legend.” Others have rallied around her legacy as an advocate for free and fair elections as well as social justice.
“She represented thousands, if not millions, of ordinary Malaysian citizens who care about our nation enough to speak up and do something when things are not right,” the Bersih Facebook page described. “Deepest condolences to her family. She is an icon who will not be forgotten. Rest in peace, Aunty Bersih.”
Our hearts go out to her family, friends and all who knew her. We sincerely pray they will find peace in her passing. As for Anne Ooi herself, we hope that she will be proud of the legacy she has left behind. It’s certainly one many will remember.
