Flash floods can be a truly terrifying occurrence. Not only can they cause immense damage to homes and belongings, but they can also claim lives. Here in Malaysia, we’ve experienced this natural disaster numerous times over the years, and several local content creators have even documented how they were nearly swept away by the surging waters.
Our neighbouring country, Singapore, recently experienced a flash flood, particularly in the Bukit Timah area. Actor Darren Lim did what any father would’ve done to ensure the safety of his child – carrying him up on his shoulder to brave through the rising waters. Here’s what happened:

Over the weekend, Singapore’s national water agency PUB issued flood risk warnings for 18 locations, including the flood-prone Bukit Timah, following heavy rainfall. Actor Darren Lim posted a video on his personal Instagram page to share his experience of carrying his youngest son Elliot on his shoulders during the aftermath of the flash flood.
“I’m picking him up from tutoring now. You can see how deep the water is,” the 52-year-old said in the video while showing that the flood water has reached knee level. Elliot can be seen opening up an umbrella to shelter both him and his father from the rain as they cross the road. When the “Strike Gold” star asked his son if he was having fun, the child can be heard replying with, “It’s very scary!”. Thankfully, a group of firefighters was nearby, as seen in the video, so if anything had happened, help would have been immediate.

Darren’s video has since garnered over 78,000 views, with many praising the father for risking his own safety to protect his son. Some of his celebrity friends, including actresses Apple Hong and Sharon Au, expressed concern for the actor and his child’s well-being. Others, like host-actress Belinda Lee, shared how blessed Elliot is to have a father like Darren, a sentiment shared by many fans in the comments.
We’re glad to know that both Darren and his son are safe now, and we hope that they didn’t catch a cold from the flood and rain. What would you have done if faced with a similar incident?
