Despite countless warnings from authorities against driving after drinking, many celebrities still find themselves behind the wheel after they’ve had a bit of alcohol. Taiwanese actor Wang Po-Chieh (王柏傑) is one of those celebs who recently found themselves in legal trouble for driving under the influence.
According to reports, the incident happened on 18th June (Tuesday) in Taipei, Taiwan, when Wang Po-Chieh crashed into a tour bus while driving. Police arrived at the scene and tested the public figure’s alcohol level using a breathalyser. Shockingly, they found that it was at around 0.44mg, which is more than the legal limit. Authorities then took Wang Po-Chieh into custody for investigation.
A few hours later, Wang Po-Chieh was released from the Shilin District Prosecutors’ Office on a NT$50,000 (approximately RM7,300) bail. In an interview, the 35-year-old claimed that he only drank on the 17th and didn’t immediately drive after consuming alcohol. However, he said he was shocked that despite the time, his blood alcohol level was still so high. Wang Po-Chieh then apologised for all the inconvenience caused and said he’ll refrain from drinking for the time being to reflect on his actions.
However, his fans were not pleased with his action or apology, taking to his social pages to voice their anger. Many criticised the star for drunk driving, saying that it was irresponsible of him. Some also said they would begin boycotting his future activities. Some also lament that many Taiwanese stars have been caught for the same crime, urging the authorities to be stricter against the perpetrators.
Unfortunately, Wang Po-Chieh isn’t the only singer who recently got arrested for driving under the influence. Earlier today, pop icon Justin Timberlake was arrested on the 19th (Malaysian time) in New York for driving while intoxicated. The “SexyBack” has since been released from custody but has yet to make a formal statement about the incident.
It’s never okay to drive under the influence – so if you ever had a drink, it’s best to have someone sober drive you around or book a taxi or e-hailing ride. Watch Wang Po-Chieh’s interview after his release below:
