Sierra Burgess Is A Loser: 4 Awkward Moments We Can Totally Relate

by Justin

Sierra Burgess Is A Loser

Dating as a young adult is hard enough, what with peer pressure and trying to figure out what to do with the rest of your life. Throw social media into the mix and, well, things can get awkward. We’re talking ‘accidentally exposing your social media stalking tendencies to your crush’ level awkward.

Well, in the new Netflix film, Sierra Burgess is a Loser, Shannon Purser’s title character takes us through the trials and tribulations of a new-age digital courtship when she connects via text with a jock who thinks she’s someone else. It doesn’t get more awkward than that… or does it?

Here are some other awkward dating moments from the new rom-com that we are all too familiar with:

1. Taking a hundred selfies to get his/her attention

Nailing a selfie the first time around is no walk in the park – getting the right amount of light and finding an angle that shows your “good side” takes effort! Chances are, you’re gonna bank somewhere between 10 to 50,000 shots until you get just the right one to send to bae.

2. Overthinking EVERY single text message

We tend to think too much and spend hours crafting the perfect text in new relationships because we don’t want to come off too strong, awkward or boring. Take a page from Sierra and Jamey (Noah Centineo)’s relationship and avoid those awkward text-tuations with a GIF of a baby panda rolling down a hill.

3. Talking on the phone all night

Once you’re past the “we’re-just-talking/texting” phase, you’ll probably graduate to talking on the phone. It can be nerve-wracking but spending hours on the phone till the wee hours of the night is a great way to connect and get to know each other better, without all the other pressures. Just don’t max out your phone bill!

4. Waiting to see who will make the first move on the first date

If you’re a guy, you’ve probably had anxiety about making contact on that first date. Do you hold her hand? Do you put your arm around her? If you try to kiss her is she going to smack you? And if you’re a girl, you’ve probably asked yourself the “will he or won’t he” question in your head a dozen times before the end of the date. The key is to not put too much thought into it – you’re already nervous enough, so take a step back and relax, and enjoy the date as much as possible.
