When a male idol enlists in the military, fans often express concern for their safety and well-being. Unfortunately, some fans also worry that the idols themselves might face mistreatment due to their position as public figures.

Recently, reports emerged revealing that SEVENTEEN (세븐틴) member Woozi (우지) was possibly a victim of power abuse from a senior in the military. According to the news, a non-commissioned officer at the Army Training Camp recently requested Woozi to help find a singer to perform at his wedding. The idol enlisted in September 2025 and had no known personal connection to the officer before his enlistment.

Woozi allegedly contacted an acquaintance, a well-known ballad singer, to perform at the wedding. The performance took place the following month, and the singer performed without receiving payment. Given the strict rules of the military, the superior’s request faced scrutiny. However, military officials stated that the request wasn’t an official order and thus didn’t violate any rules or regulations.

Additionally, officials stated that the request was not coercive and that Woozi agreed to the request voluntarily as a favour. Despite the clarification, many netizens are outraged by the superior’s behaviour. They argue that making a personal request, especially towards a new trainee, is an abuse of authority. Netizens also noted that the strict hierarchy system makes it difficult for juniors to refuse a superior’s request.

It’s worth mentioning that such power abuse in the South Korean military system is unfortunately common. The issue has even appeared in pop culture, for example, the Netflix series “D.P”, which magnifies the hazing and bullying culture inside the military. Many male idols have also talked about their experience in the military, exposing their superiors for subjecting them and the other juniors to abuse and harassment.

Given the military officials’ statement, it’s unlikely that the superior will face action for the request. However, since Woozi is currently serving in the same training unit as the senior, many fans continue to express concern. What are your thoughts on this?
