If you’ve been reading the news, you’ve probably heard about the recent scandal involving Auntie Anne’s and its now-fired employee. The news quickly went viral and sparked many memes and jokes. However, netizens aren’t too happy about one company trying to jump on the bandwagon.
Recently, the official Twitter account of Mydin Malaysia posted a tweet related to the recent viral issue. In the tweet, the hypermarket poked fun at Auntie Anne’s while promoting its business, writing, “We assure that our breads were never kissed during production.” Mydin also shared two photos, one of the fresh bread section and one of the production staff. The post was well-received, with many netizens amused by the Mydin social media staff’s wittiness.

However, some netizens weren’t tickled by the tweet and instead called Mydin out for hypocrisy. One Twitter responded to the post, writing, “So quick to jump on current issues but see what happens when your company is involved in the matter. I don’t see you making noise on your previous issue.” The user then brought up the news that Mydin received an RM20,000 fine for selling unauthorized cosmetics.
The tweet sparked the argument that Mydin is shamelessly using Auntie Anne’s recent ordeal as a cheap promotion for their company. Of course, taking advantage of current issues is common for businesses and Mydin is far from the first company to do so. However, many said it’s hypocritical for the hypermarket to make fun of other companies when they also have flaws in their business practices.

The call-out post received mixed reactions, with some agreeing that Mydin should be more reflective before jumping on the “Auntie Anne’s meme” bandwagon. However, others defended the company, saying that it’s not a big deal for them to make jokes about other businesses. Some said that the staff who made the original tweet is merely trying to go viral and shouldn’t be responsible for the company’s other issues.
In an era where businesses have to do the most to stand out, we can’t fault Mydin for using another company’s misfortune to promote themselves – but what are your thoughts on this?
