Selena Gomez may be a “Bad Liar” but she ain’t lying about her new song.
After teasing fans for the past few days on social media, the 24-year-old has finally released the full track to her highly-anticipated single, “Bad Liar”.
Songwriter Justin Tranter described the production of “Bad Liar” as “one of those magical moments where the song just comes together very quickly and felt so good”, before explaining that “the lyrics are really cool and descriptive about when you first start having feelings for someone, but don’t want to admit it, which turns you into a ‘Bad Liar’.”
With verses like, “I was walking down the street the other day/ Trying to distract myself/ Then I see your face/ Ooh, you got someone else” as well as “What could possibly happen next/ Can we focus on the love/ Paint my kiss across your chest/ Be the art, I’ll be the brush”, it’s easy to assume that she’s either referencing Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd) or Justin Bieber.
When Gomez first uploaded the makeup-free selfie of herself, many were curious about the hospital bracelet and bandage wrapped around her wrist. Photographer Petra Collins later clarified that “Selena (had) came straight from the hospital to this shoot – from being there for lupus“.
If “Bad Liar” sounds familiar to you, it’s because the song bares a striking resemblance to the Talking Heads’ classic 1977 hit, “Psycho Killer”. The tune has a very minimal beat but it’s catchy at the same time. Those anticipating a bubblegum pop jam might be disappointed by her new style of music.
The music video for “Bad Liar” was also released, but it is only available on Spotify for the time being. Those who don’t have an account will just have to be content with the audio.
