How Would Netizens React If McDonald’s & Starbucks Exited Malaysia Due To Boycott?

Many Malaysians have been boycotting several companies and famous brands due to their supposed link to Israel – but the two companies that have been affected the most are probably McDonald’s and Starbucks. However, given that many Malaysians were once loyal customers of these brands, how would locals react to a permanent loss?

That was the question Twitter user Khairul Aqmal posed online, “If McD and Starbucks had to shut down operations and exit the Malaysian market, would you be sad?”. The simple question brought in a ton of responses from Malaysians, many of whom have been actively boycotting these two companies.

Surprisingly, many said they wouldn’t be sad if McDonald’s or Starbucks had ceased operations in Malaysia, adding that there are plenty of equally good alternatives, specifically local brands. Some also said closing down these two could benefit the locals’ health and improve the businesses of local brands like Marrybrown.

However, many mentioned they would miss specific menu items that are the signature of the two chains, like the Spicy Fried Chicken. Some also noted that a permanent closure of the two brands could affect the country’s economy and lead to unemployment issues, especially towards those with disabilities.

Of course, many were just skceptical about the possibility of McDonald’s or Starbucks exiting the country. Some noted that the business for the two brands is ongoing as usual since many Malaysians still don’t partake in the boycott. In fact, Starbucks have been actively offering Buy 1 Free 1 promos over the past few weekends.

Since many netizens said they would only miss specific menu items, maybe companies or food influencers can come up with copycat recipes – but what do you think about this? Would you be sad if you could no longer get a McD Cheeseburger or a Starbucks Frappucino?
