Godzilla, the King of Monsters and King Kong, the Eighth Wonder of the World, might reunite in one cinematic universe for an epic battle.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary Pictures is planning to move its “King Kong” prequel, “Kong: Skull Island“, from Universal Pictures to Warner Bros. Talks are currently underway between the 3 studios.
If it’s a done deal, Legendary could team up with Warner Bros for a possible Godzilla/King Kong crossover.
The 2014 rebooted version of Toho Co.’s “Godzilla“, which was directed by Gareth Edward, was a co-production between Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. It was positively received by critics and fans, with some praising its slow pace and build-up. It also grossed around $200 million on a $160 million budget.
During last year’s Comic-Con at San Diego, Legendary announced that a sequel to “Godzilla” will be released in 2018. At that time, the studio also made a surprise announcement about a “King Kong” prequel, with British actor Tom Hiddleston starring in the lead role.
In just a few weeks, Legendary will begin shooting “Kong: Skull Island”. Though the move from Universal Pictures to Warner Bros is not a done deal yet, we are unsure if it will cause a delay in shooting. It was further reported that there are plans to put future “Kong” films in the same cinematic universe as the “Godzilla” films, to which WB owns the sequel rights.
It surely won’t be the first time that the 2 titans are being placed in the same universe as they’ve previously squared off in Toho Co’s “King Kong vs Godzilla” in 1962. It’s just a matter of time before they reunite.
Apart from Hiddleston, “Kong: Skull Island” also stars Toby Kebbell, Brie Larson, Tom Wilkinson, Jason Mitchell, and Corey Hawkins (of “Straight Outta Compton” fame). Jordan Vogt-Roberts (of “The Kings of Summer” fame) will direct it based on a script by John Gatins and Max Borenstein. Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni, who previously worked together on “Godzilla”, will produce it while Alex Garcia will serve as the executive producer.
“Kong: Skull Island” is currently slated for release on 10th March 2017.
While plot details are still vague, the story will be set in the mysterious, dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers venture deep inside the island.
