Dive into these fresh releases and discover new sounds to enjoy!

Swaria – “Gadis Angkasa” EP

Swaria, a supergroup born from Kedah’s small yet vibrant alternative music scene, has just released their debut EP, “Gadis Angkasa.” The EP, which dropped on 30th August 2024, features five tracks that showcase the band’s unique blend of indie rock, alternative, post-punk revival, and surf pop.

The title track, “Gadis Angkasa,” sets the tone for the EP with its narrative of a sailor experiencing surreal hallucinations at sea. Following up with the second single, “Succubus,” Swaria taps into a more intense emotional vein, reflecting the challenges they faced during its recording.

“Succubus” has become a live favourite, often closing their shows with an electrifying energy that resonates with audiences. The song’s raw, high-energy performances are a testament to the band’s passion and the emotional journey they’ve experienced together, solidifying Swaria’s place as a significant force in the local music scene.

.Feast – “Membangun & Menghancurkan” Album

.Feast, the Jakarta-based band known for their sociopolitical lyrics, released their latest album titled “Membangun & Menghancurkan” on 30th August 2024.

5 Underrated Malaysian Indie Bands You Should Listen To Right Now!

Not the album they set out to create initially, the band found pride in the final product, which showcases their evolution both musically and personally. It constitutes a collection of 13 new songs, each bringing a diverse range of emotions and stories, reflecting the band’s more human and introspective side.

This album marks a creative reinvention for .Feast, as they stray slightly from their signature sociopolitical themes in favour of exploring more nuanced and personal stories. Notable tracks include “Nina,” the third single produced by Vega Antares, which stands out as the album’s most tender song. Other personal contributions, such as “Langitruntuh,” “Arteri,” and “o,Tuan,” explore emotional aspects ranging from fear of loss to pure joy. Through “Membangun & Menghancurkan,” .Feast has reignited their passion for music, delivering a dynamic and deeply resonant album.

Summer Whales – “Doughy” EP

Summer Whales, a dynamic duo from Kyoto, have just released their debut EP, “Doughy” – a powerful example of their ability to combine the raw energy of grunge with the contemplative depth of post-punk. The EP opens with “Are People Flowers,” a track that blurs the lines between prose and poetry, using a collective voice that hints at shared experiences and discoveries.

The second track, “Stroller,” offers a more intimate vibe, intertwining personal emotions with the band’s overall message. The instrumental “Scene: 4 A.M.” follows, creating an atmospheric break that captures the quiet reality of early morning, recorded by Aoi and Kubo during a late-night chat. The EP concludes with “Chasing Your Shadow,” a track that delves into themes of longing and self-discovery.

Throughout “Doughy,”  Summer Whales showcase their ability to craft songs that are both diverse in style and emotionally engaging, giving listeners a glimpse into their world and leaving them wanting more.

FUGŌ – “99” Album

FUGŌ, an indie alternative band gaining recognition in the local music scene, have taken a significant step forward with the release of their debut album, “99” last month. This album reflects FUGŌ’s evolution as a band that boldly explores various music genres, blending vintage electro, late 70s and 80s pop, funk, modern rock, and new wave. Each track in “99” showcases a unique touch, crafted with high creativity and dedication.

The album features standout tracks such as “Pentas Sandiwara,” “Cinematic,” and the title track “99.” Hakim Kamal, the band’s vocalist and guitarist, describes the album as a major milestone that underscores their commitment to music production. The decision to incorporate Malay lyrics in tracks like “99” and “Pentas Sandiwara” has successfully attracted new listeners.
