In the affluent Seoul neighbourhood of Apgujeong, a female street performer recently went viral online but is drawing major criticism from netizens.
Known as the Apgujeong Box Girl (압구정 박스녀), the woman has been gaining traction for walking around the streets of Apgujeong with a large box covering her presumably naked body. If that wasn’t daring enough, the woman has also been inviting men on the streets to reach into the box to touch her chest.
Netizens have taken notice of her inappropriate activities and shared them on Korean online forums. Many slammed her for the “street act”, calling it disgusting and obscene, even saying she should receive punishment for public indecency. Many also took notice of the QR code on the box, leading many to speculate that this act could be a promotion for a pornographic site or sexual services.
News outlets in Seoul have further investigated the woman, revealing her to be A-in (아인), an adult actress. When interviewed, A-in said the stunt was a performance act piece meant to shed light on society’s double standards towards women. A-in said, “I thought it was weird that the public doesn’t care when men take off their shirts, but when women take off their clothes, they get punished. This type of performance art breaks this (double standard).”
Despite the explanation, many were still unhappy with A-in’s stunt, saying it is “nothing but an ad for porn” and will hurt women’s rights in Korea. Netizens also commented about the men touching A-in, calling them perverted and shameless. A-in has also posted videos of her street act on her Instagram account, which many say have seen an increase in followers after her stunt went viral.
What do you think about A-in’s stunt? Do you think it’s a performance art piece? Or is she just blatantly promoting porn?
