This year’s General Elections aka GE15 have been the talk of the nation for weeks. It’s understandable. There are plenty of candidates throwing their hats in the ring. Some well received, some not so well received. Unfortunately for independent candidate Nur Fathiah Syazwan Shaharudin, not everyone was happy with her nomination.
Nur Fathiah aka Cleopatra made news when she declared her intention to run for the parliamentary seat in Batu. It came as a surprise, mainly because most knew her as an internet celebrity. While Cleo has been receiving more support recently, previously, some claimed she was a pornstar, much to her distress.
Cleo had started her campaign for the Batu seat in early October. While she worked on getting her name out there, her posts caught the attention of some naysayers on Twitter. Someone commented on her supposedly unkept appearance. This elicited another comment from a fellow netizen which said: “This lady? (She’s a) pornstar.”
Unsurprisingly, Cleo felt the need to step in and defend herself. “I’m a single mother of two,” she responded to the hurtful tweets. “Please don’t say this to me.” Cleo added that she understood there would be people who aren’t happy with her life. She knew they would stoop to slandering and insulting her and her two kids. “However, I accept (everything) against me and (will) give it to God because He alone knows best,” she said.
Well, the internet celebrity has gained quite a following since, and not just from those in Batu. Hopefully, she does her best for the voting day this Saturday! We can only wish her luck.
