Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor recently announced the discovery of a rare earth element (REE) in the state, which could be worth up to RM62bil.

The mineral, which is said to be found in abundance in parts of the state, has caused netizens to compare Kedah with the fictional city of Wakanda from “Black Panther” following the discovery.

It was reported that the state has made an agreement with a Kuala Lumpur-based joint venture company to mine for the REE. According to Sanusi, the deal between the state government and the company has been made. However, he refused to name the mineral nor the company involved.

Earlier on, Sanusi stated that the discovery is a gift from God to the state, and it will bring a change to the people of Kedah. He went on to say, “The REE was not radioactive and was found in Sik, Ulu Muda and Baling, and I hear in some parts of Lenggong, Perak too. It has been common knowledge to geologists for the past 20 years.”

He explained, “We have approved a venture permit for the new mineral in Kedah and according to a study, this mineral is worth RM62 billion (and is) stored under our land.” According to FMT, Sanusi hopes that the federal government will alter its policy on minerals, where it will benefit locals instead of outsiders garnering the resources.

Following the revelation, #WakedahForever started trending on Twitter after netizens joked around that Kedah has the same potential to be the real-life Wakanda from Marvel’s “Black Panther” franchise. The similarities are uncanny, since Wakanda is known to be the richest city in the Marvel Universe due to having a supply of Vibranium, which is one of the most-recognised fictional minerals.
