We’re at a loss for words.
Just moments ago, South Korean entertainment powerhouse YG Entertainment officially announced that 2NE1 (투애니원) will be disbanding and are no longer a group.
This is of course coming as a complete shock to Blackjacks (as 2NE1’s fans are lovingly called) as YG Entertainment previously promised fans back in April that the K-Pop idol girl group would be going on as a 3-member group following Minzy’s leave, with a comeback scheduled to happen.
Compared to the rest of her members, Minzy is also the only one who hasn’t been active ever since 2NE1’s last album, “Crush”, and their last world tour. Members CL and Dara are busy with their solo activities (CL with her US debut and Dara on variety shows), and Park Bom has pretty much been on an indefinite hiatus since her drug scandal.
YG Entertainment’s statement is as follows:
As of May 2016, 2NE1’s exclusive contract with YG was over and as Minzy was no longer able to continue with us YG and the other members after long discussion have decided to officially disband 2NE1.
As 2NE1 has been the representing girl group of YG for the last 7 years, we cannot express how sad we are, however we have decided that it would be too hard for them to keep going and rather than wait on 2NE1’s activities without promise of when it will happen decided to focus on the members’ solo careers.
We would like to thank everyone for their love and support for 2NE1 and their music.
As of 2016 May we have signed solo artist contracts with CL and Sandara Park and Park Bom has not resigned with YG.
2NE1 was formed by YG Entertainment in 2009. The group originally consisted of CL, Bom, Dara, and Minzy. The 4th and the youngest member, Minzy, officially left the group on 5th April 2016.
The girls were last seen as a full group at the star-studded 2015 MAMA in Hong Kong, where they performed a special stage for the audience. Their appearance initially led Blackjacks (as 2NE1’s fans are lovingly called) to believe that a 2NE1 comeback was looming, but YG Entertainment was quick to extinguish the rumours.
More details to come.
UPDATE (27th November):
Former 2NE1 member Sandara Park aka Dara has taken the liberty to write Blackjacks and Parkers (Dara’s personal fandom) a note following the news of the group’s disbandment. The note, written on a Marco Polo Ortigas Manila hotel letter print, wasn’t shared on Dara’s social media accounts but Dara was filmed writing it before handing it over to the Parkers.
“Please share this with all Blackjacks,” she can be heard saying in Tagalog in one of the videos.
