2 Watches We’re Crushing Hard On: Citizen Satellite Wave X & Longines Spirit Flyback

Watches and aviation have gone hand-in-hand for decades now, so much so that a whole new range of watches has been made specifically for those who are aeronautically-inclined.

For those who’d like to be among the clouds or venture out farther than ever, here are the timepieces you need to add to your collection.

Citizen Satellite Wave X

Ten years ago, Citizen launched its Satellite Wave F100, introducing the world to a GPS satellite-synchronised watch. Initially developed with the groundbreaking function of receiving time signals from orbiting satellites in space, the Japanese watchmaking group is here to recapture the astronomical magic with the Satellite Wave X.

The Satellite Wave X comes in two different versions, both of which are outfitted with Citizen’s proprietary Super Titanium and Duratect Titanium Carbide DLC coatings. Because of this, these watches boast five times the toughness and resistance to damage compared to stainless steel.

Further emphasising the idea of satellites roaming through space, the timepieces’ metal bracelet links are moulded in a way to imitate a satellite’s solar panels. The watch measures 45.5mm in width and 12.7mm in thickness, with a distinct triangular protrusion on the right-hand side.

Dials are rendered in an intense black or deep blue hue and adorned with glittering accents, mimicking the vastness of deep space as well as the glittering stars that illuminate its dark corners. What makes these watches tick is their F150 movement, fitted with Citizen’s Eco-Drive which eliminates the need to replace batteries, allowing them to last up to seven years on full charge.

The Satellite Wave X wristwatches will be available to purchase this September through Citizen’s website for £1,395 (~RM8,015).

Longines Spirit Flyback

As one of Longines’s most recognisable and popular models, the Spirit Flyback line is getting two new additions in a new retro-code colourway.

Available in both green and brown, these watches measure 42mm in width and are encased in stainless steel. The green model features a luscious design, echoing that of deep jungles, thanks to its matte-shaded green dial with a matching ceramic bezel insert. But to add a little more visual variety, the forest colour tone is paired with an 18-carat yellow gold crown, pusher, and bezel cap.

Similarly, the other timepiece features a shaded brown dial and bezel insert, which creates a warmer tone. Pair this with a calm 18-carat rose gold bezel cap, pushers, and crown, and you have a piece that is easy on the eyes and complements anything you wear. Regardless of your chosen timepiece, these watches feature yellow gold or rose-gold-plated Arabic numerals and hands. All of this is coated in Longines’s Super-LumiNova Old Radium for visibility and readability in the dark.

Two tonal subcounters adorn the dials, which power the watches’ flyback chronograph features thanks to the L791.4 calibre, which has received COSC certification. You can see the magic happen from behind through its open caseback, beating at 28,000 vibrations every hour with a 68-hour power reserve for added longevity. Embellishing the calibre is a micro-rotor in either yellow or rose gold, which features the word “LONGINES FLYBACK” engraved on it.

The new Spirit Flyback is available now through Longines’s website and boutiques for US$6,500 (~RM28,299).
