Weddings are meant to be joyous, momentous occasions for the whole family, celebrating the love shared between two people. That said, no one likes to be upstaged by someone else on their special day. How would you feel if a family member showed up at your wedding dressed similarly to you?
Local singer Erissa Puteri recently tied the knot with her husband, Daniel Iskandar, in a grand wedding ceremony. Photos and videos from the solemnisation have since circulated online, prompting netizens to point out something amiss. Many claimed that the artist’s sister-in-law attempted to upstage her with an attention-grabbing outfit.

Earlier this week, Daniel Iskandar’s mother shared a video of her son and daughter-in-law’s solemnisation ceremony on TikTok, in which she and her daughter were seen wiping away tears during a prayer. The clip was followed by a series of photos showing the family posing with the groom, before concluding with shots of the newlyweds.
Netizens were quick to criticise Daniel’s sister for wearing a white Baju Kurung strikingly similar to the bride’s—and even donning a veil, as though it were her own wedding. Many accused her of trying to steal the spotlight on the couple’s special day, while also questioning why she believed such an outfit was appropriate. Some also criticised Erissa’s mother-in-law’s captions in her TikTok posts, suggesting she acted more like she was losing a son than gaining a new family member.

Following the backlash, Erissa Puteri took to social media to address the situation. In her statement, she said: “Thank you all for your concerns about my feelings regarding this matter. However, I am not happy with how some of you are judging [my sister-in-law] for what she was wearing.” The vocalists clarified that she and her husband set the dress code for the solemnisation, and everyone wore white during the occasion.
As for the issue regarding the veil, she insisted that Daniel’s sister was wearing a shawl out of respect for the religious ceremony, and that she had even asked the artist for her opinion on the outfit. “I didn’t find it overshadowing, and I adore her. I was totally fine with what she was wearing. Let’s not spread hateful comments anymore,” the 22-year-old added.

While the singer’s statement may not have dispelled all doubts among netizens, it’s clear that this could be the only time she addresses the issue, as people typically don’t want to prolong such matters. What’s your take on the situation? Was the outfit inappropriate, or did netizens overreact?
