When it comes to food, especially in this day and age, price spikes doesn’t seem to surprise us anymore. One recent example would be when an individual expressed his dissatisfaction over a simple meal costing him RM28. However, what if the price stated at a food outlet is priced based on one’s skin colour?

A video went viral on TikTok recently (Sunday, 8th November), with over 1.2 million views (at the time of writing), involving a Nasi Kukus vendor in Puchong. Malaysian netizens are now calling out the vendor, Cik Roses, for allegedly charging different prices to her customers based on their race. Fortunately, the vendor released another video after the misunderstanding, which also went viral with over 420.6 thousand views (at the time of writing), explaining the whole situation and clearing the tension among netizens.

In the initial viral video, Cik Roses can be seen serving a simple meal to an Indian customer, charging him RM17, and then went on to serve a Malay customer, who ordered a similar meal but was only charged RM8. This caused outrage among Malaysian netizens, pointing out the price difference for both customers and calling her out for being racist.

In an effort to set things right, Cik Roses later released a video where she explained the incident that happened. “The Indian customer actually came with a friend. His friend ordered rice with Ayam Kunyit, priced at RM8, and added rice, making it RM9,” she said. Meanwhile, the Indian guy ordered the same meal, but without the added rice, costing RM8, which resulted in RM17 for both meals. The alleged Indian customer even left a comment under the previous viral video to clear the confusion, stating that he paid for both his and his friend’s meals.

After she posted her explanation video, numerous local netizens praised her for handling the situation professionally without getting angry, whereas some wondered why netizens were keen to find some kind of reason to start a fight among races.

Cik Roses ended her video by reminding netizens to avoid making accusations without actually knowing the full story behind the incident. She also reminded netizens to avoid being racist to others. “This proves that I’m not racist; I love all races,” the vendor stated, handling the situation professionally.
