More than two decades after Shaolin Soccer became a global cult classic, director and actor Stephen Chow is returning to the pitch with a brand-new spin-off that is one step closer to reaching international audiences.
According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, the long-awaited follow-up, now titled Kung Fu Soccer, has secured international distribution rights through Singapore-based distributor Encore Films. The company will oversee theatrical releases and related rights outside of China, while Maoyan Entertainment will handle domestic distribution.
A New Generation Takes The Field
Originally developed under the title Shaolin Women’s Soccer, the upcoming film shifts the spotlight from the original all-male team to a women’s football squad known as the Emei team.
Like its predecessor, the story blends football with martial arts, featuring players who use extraordinary kung fu skills to overcome the odds and pursue championship glory.
The film stars acclaimed Chinese actress Zhang Xiaofei alongside Dilraba Dilmurat and Lay Zhang. While Chow returns as writer and director, he is not expected to appear on-screen.
25 Years After A Cult Classic
Released in 2001, Shaolin Soccer became one of Stephen Chow’s most iconic works. The film followed a former Shaolin monk who reunited his martial arts brothers to form an unconventional football team, resulting in a hilarious and action-packed blend of sports, comedy, and kung fu.
The movie was both a critical and commercial success, grossing over US$42 million (RM174.11 million) worldwide and helping introduce Chow’s unique comedic style to international audiences.
The new spin-off also arrives during the film’s 25th anniversary year, making it a particularly significant return for longtime fans.
Can It Recapture The Magic?
Few sports comedies have achieved the lasting popularity of Shaolin Soccer, which remains beloved for its over-the-top action sequences, absurd humour, and heartfelt underdog story.
With a fresh cast, a women’s team at its centre, and Stephen Chow back in the director’s chair, Kung Fu Soccer will undoubtedly be one of the most closely watched Asian film releases of the year.
Whether it can live up to the legacy of its predecessor remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: football and kung fu are about to collide once again.
