A week ago, it was announced that “Jurassic World” director Colin Trevorrow had quit “Star Wars: Episode IX” due to “differing visions for the project”. Until today, It is unclear as to what ultimately led to Colin Trevorrow’s exit, as he has yet to comment. But he was attached to the project since August 2015.

And now, a new director has been announced. Well, not “new” new.

J.J. Abrams, the director who successfully rebooted George Lucas’ “Star Wars” with 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens“, will helm 2019’s “Star Wars: Episode IX”, the final film in the sequel trilogy.

In an official statement released via starwars.com, Lucasfilm wrote:

“J.J. Abrams, who launched a new era of Star Wars with The Force Awakens in 2015, is returning to complete the sequel trilogy as writer and director of Star Wars: Episode IX. Abrams will co-write the film with Chris Terrio. Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm.”

Just in case you’ve forgotten, the multiple award-winning J.J. Abrams was in large part, the reason why “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was so immensely successful. In fact, the film became the third-highest-grossing film of all time behind “Avatar” and “Titanic” when it was released in 2015. J.J. Abrams’ directorial credentials include “Mission: Impossible III”, “Star Trek”, “Super 8”, and “Star Trek Into Darkness“.
