Many stars have had to cancel performances at the last minute for various reasons. Girls’ Generation (소녀시대) member Taeyeon (태연) recently cancelled her concert just two days before she was supposed to take the stage, sparking criticism towards her agency.

The singer is currently on her “The Tense” solo tour and was set to perform at Ariake Arena in Japan on 19th and 20th April 2025. These two dates are the only Japanese shows that Taeyeon has for this current tour. Unfortunately, SM Entertainment released a statement on 17th April, saying that the two-day concert had been cancelled as equipment needed for the show wouldn’t arrive in time.

In its statement, the agency said, “The equipment used for the Asia tour is still being shipped to Japan. However, it hasn’t arrived yet, and because of that, it’s very hard to prepare everything in time for the concerts.”. Before her Japanese shows, Taeyeon performed in Jakarta on 12th April 2025 (Saturday). SM Entertainment apologised for the cancellation, saying it’s looking into possibly rescheduling the shows.

While not mentioned in the statement, the delay on the equipment’s shipment is likely due to an ongoing strike by dockworkers and port workers in Japan. Nevertheless, many fans have since reacted to the statement, unsurprisingly disappointed by the cancellation. However, their disappointment soon turned into anger after a fan, who claimed to work in cargo ship operations, said SM Entertainment could’ve avoided the delay.

The fan argued that the shipment ports in Japan are still operating as usual despite the ongoing strike, but only specific shipments are prioritised. As such, the individual blamed SM Entertainment for not giving higher priority to the concert equipment, which caused the delay. This allegation sparked anger amongst Taeyeon fans, with many calling the agency out for mismanagement.

Taeyeon also addressed the matter, apologising to fans for the cancellation. However, some fans said this issue might cause the idol to consider leaving the company. What are your thoughts on this?
