Last year, Selena Gomez hit a personal low. Shortly after cancelling her “Revival” World Tour, the singer took a 3-month, self-imposed break.
In talking to In Style, the pop star explained why it was important to distance herself from Hollywood. The 25-year-old entertainer also recounts a disagreement with her record label and is adamant that she doesn’t need to rely on a man for happiness. That doesn’t mean that she’s not in a blissful relationship with The Weeknd though.
“Last year I canceled my tour and went away for 90 days, and it was the best thing that I ever could’ve done. I had no phone, nothing, and I was scared. But it was amazing, and I learned a lot. Everything I cared about, I stopped caring about. I came out, and it felt like, ‘OK, I can only go forward.’ And there are still days. I go to therapy. I believe in that and talking about where you are. But I’m in a really, really healthy place,” Gomez told the publication.
The Texan beauty also shared that The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, is a positive force for her. “I don’t depend on one area of my life to make me happy. It’s really important for me to love and nourish my friends and family and make sure I never get influenced by a guy… I’m lucky because he’s more of a best friend than anything else,” she added.
Since returning to the limelight, fans have notice a change in her music career. The pop star has been artistically leaning towards the alternative genre instead of bumble-gum pop. Gomez recounts a recent disagreement she had with her record label. Perhaps the discussion concerned her new singles, “Bad Liar” and the risky “Fetish“?
“Just recently I was by myself with people from my record label, and I looked down the table and said, ‘I respect your opinions, but you’re going to let me make the end call. Just give me a few days to sleep on it.’ And I walked out and it felt like Anne Hathaway in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’,” Gomez shared. “It felt good because I wasn’t being disrespectful. Just honest.”
