A Scam? Fans Discuss Conspiracy Behind Megacon Kpop Mega Concert Cancellation

After being disappointed by the sudden cancellation of the long-awaited Megacon Kpop Mega Concert, fans have begun investigating the concert organisers to see what’s going on. To their surprise, the company in question might not even exist!

Twitter user @/sunwoals recently shared that after the concert’s cancellation, she made a report to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living (KPDN) regarding the concert and the organiser. The next day, she received a reply from an officer regarding Starex Global, saying that the business premise does not exist and urged her to report the company as a scam.

However, after the tweet, a couple of Twitter users shared images of the address showing that the Starex Global office does exist. One tweet also shows someone visiting the address and proving that the office signboard is still up.

But, it is unknown whether the office is occupied because another user, @/anelfmyeolchi, shared a message from someone pointing out that the office was up for sale. The tweet also included screenshots of the sale post from a property website.

The same Twitter user had previously shared a reply from Starex Global clarifying the cancellation. According to Starex, the issue was due to a flight ticket mistake by Malaysia Airlines (MAS). However, @/anelfmyeochi also shared that, according to a MAS customer service officer, the airline was unaware of the event’s existence.

In her thread compiling updates about the event, she also shared that despite Starex claiming the Malaysian Tourism Ministry had supported the event, the ministry was also unaware of such an event. The netizen also discovered that the Central Agency for Application for Filming and Performance by Foreign Artists (PUSPAL) did receive an application for the concert but had only recently approved the event.

Images shared by those staying near Sunway Lagoon on the supposed day of the event added more confusion to the mix. They showed an incomplete concert stage at Surf Beach, the concert venue, which proves the event was supposed to go on – or at least, there was indeed a real concert (despite the company allegedly not existing).

There have been no updates to this story as of reporting and none of the involved parties have issued an official statement. For now, the fans affected by the concert are urged to file a claim to The Tribunal for Consumer Claims.

It looks like this story keeps getting messier the more we dig into it. Hopefully, the fans will receive their refunds soon and can put this thing behind them. What do you make of this situation?

Update (31st May):

Starex Global has since refuted the rumour of Megacon Kpop Mega Concert being a scam and maintained that they are an official, registered company. According to Xuan, Starex’s Managing Director Andy Tse stated that the concert is “reasonable and legitimate“.

They also reiterated that Malaysian Airlines had been the one to cost them RM300,000 and the concert by mistakenly registering 19 business class tickets as economy class and throwing a wrench in their scheduling. Additionally, Starex claimed they will release details of the promised refund soon.
