Iconic television actress, Mary Tyler Moore, who played Laura Petrie on “The Dick Van Dyke Show” has died. She was 80 years old.
“Today, beloved icon, Mary Tyler Moore, passed away at the age of 80 in the company of friends and her loving husband. A groundbreaking actress, producer, and passionate advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Mary will be remembered as a fearless visionary who turned the world on with her smile,” reads the official statement on the actress’ passing.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Mary Tyler Moore started acting on television and in commercials through popular TV show, “The Dick Van Dyke Show” in 1961, where she played Laura Petrie, the wife of Rob Petrie (played by Dick Van Dyke). She won her first Emmy and her first Golden Globe for her performance on that series.
After that, she launched “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” in 1970. The 7-season series, which was created by Jamed L. Brooks and Allan Burns, is known for featuring an independent career woman as the lead. The star also starred in Robert Redford’s “Ordinary People” (1980) and the movie earned her an Oscar nomination.
According to the Independent, she has been suffering from heart and kidney problems over the past 2 years. She was a diabetic and she had a benign brain tumour removed in 2011.
She is survived by her husband of over 33 years, Dr. S. Robert Levine.
