The 2005 movie “Sepet” was a cultural phenomenon, to say the least. The award-winning film by the late Yasmin Ahmad touched the hearts of many with its beautiful storytelling – and nearly 20 years later, we still see Malaysians taking inspiration from the piece.
Recently, local photographer Azyan Syazwani Rozik took to Instagram to share photos of a pre-wedding shoot she did with a Malaysian-Filipino couple, Faiq and Mhae. However, what caught netizens’ attention was that the shoot was inspired by the movie “Sepet” to convey the background of the couple’s multicultural relationship. Even more interesting was the photoshoot feature recreations of several iconic scenes from the film.

Azyan shared more about Faiq and Mhae’s love story, revealing that the couple first met ten years ago and later pursued a long-distance relationship between Malaysia and Hong Kong. It’s believed that the couple chose the “Sepet” theme for the wedding photoshoot because they found similarities between their relationship and the relationship of Jason and Orked from the movie.
While there were many beautiful shots, the highlight of the photoshoot was the replication of scenes from “Sepet”. With Faiq dressed in a white shirt and sarong and Mhae wearing a traditional Filipino dress, the couple recreated the movie’s iconic poster, the scene of Jason and Orked at the bus stop and their date at a fast food restaurant. In the photos, Azyan also included the corresponding lines from the scenes in the movie.

Faiq and Mhae’s photoshoot has received a lot of praise from netizens, mostly applauding the recreation of “Sepet” scenes, as well as the overall theme of the photoshoot. Many also commended Azyan for her work, saying she did a great job at sharing the couple’s love story. Actress Sharifah Amani, who played Orked, also gave her seal of approval on the photoshoot and wished the couple all the best on their upcoming wedding.
What a stunning way to celebrate Faiq and Mhae’s love whilst paying tribute to a beloved local film. Congratulations to the happy couple on their marriage, and kudos to Azyan for a job well done!
