If you were shopping or even working in an office in the Klang Valley yesterday (Wednesday, 15th October), you probably experienced the widespread power outage. At around 4:15pm, many areas, including Universiti Malaya, Bukit Damansara, Mont Kiara, Mid Valley Megamall, Pavilion Damansara Heights, Sunway Velocity and TRX, were affected by the blackout, causing concern among visitors and shoppers.

Netizens took to social media to share updates about the outage, advising others to reconsider visiting these areas and reminding them to stay cautious during the blackout. Thankfully, power was restored in some of these areas in less than an hour, and everything resumed as usual. But what caused the outage? Here’s what we know:

In an official statement issued by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the widespread power outage was caused by an incident at the Edra Power Plant, a private generating station in Melaka. The exact incident in question was not disclosed. When the blackout first occurred, the company reassured the public that it was working to restore power in stages across all affected areas, while providing regular updates on the progress.

According to its social media posts, the outage affected not only the Klang Valley but also other areas, including Johor Bahru, Kluang, Tampin, Melaka, Ipoh, Kuantan and Sendayan. Thankfully, power was fully restored across all areas by 5:54pm. “TNB would like to thank all affected customers for their patience, and we apologise for the inconvenience caused by this supply disruption,” the statement reads.

Meanwhile, photos and videos of the blackout have been shared across social media, showing what happened during the outage. Some users said they were shopping or dining at shopping centres, while others were working in offices or attending classes. A few netizens also shared footage of people at the TRX 106 building going down the stairs during the evacuation.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries resulting from the blackout. This is not the first time such an incident has occurred, as there was a major power outage in the Klang Valley back in 2022. At the time, it was caused by a fault in one of the pieces of equipment at the Main Entrance Substation (PMU) in Johor.

Here are some videos during the blackout:
