Are you into theatre, dance, film, photography, design, music, food, fashion, and crafts? If you said yes to all of the aforementioned, then you best clear your calendar and start making plans for the George Town Festival 2016 (#GTF2016).
For the 7th consecutive year, Penang’s annual event is back to wow audiences with over 100 free and ticketed events of exciting activities, educational talks, and performing showcases featuring both international and local content during this month-long arts and culture festival.
With a myriad of acts and events already lined-up, here are 3 early favourites from #GTF2016:
- “Triptyque” – Canadian group Les 7 doigts de la main, who have performed at the 2012 Academy Awards Ceremony and the opening ceremony of Sochi Olympic Games, will be showcasing a 3-part show that fuses circus acrobatics and contemporary dance.
- “Smashed” – Performed by Britain’s jugglers of Gandini Juggling, the spectacle is a mix of circus and theatre that explores the dark yet humorous side of human nature. Safe to say, you’ll never perceive juggling or apples the same way again.
- “Moved by Padi” – Led by Malaysia’s leading choreographer and dancer Aida Redza, the multi-arts collaborative project honours the spirit of paddy through dance and art installation.
Of course, there’s also the A+SEAN Showcase held at the Penang Esplanade (aka Padang Kota Lama) featuring a fun mix of music, fashion, and culture from the best of Australian and Southeast Asian talents.
The highlight of the 2-day event (30th and 31st July) would be a music concert featuring popular acts from ASEAN countries including Indonesian band Nidji, Malaysian “Queen of Jazz” Sheila Majid, rising YouTube star Raisa Adriana, hip-hop artistes Joe Flizzow and SonaOne, rock bands Bittersweet, OAG and Ocean of Fire, as well as female song birds Dasha Logan and Bihzhu.
The experience will be further elevated by the giant Snuff Puppets from Australia and Dutch scientist Theo Jansen’s Strandbeest kinetic installations – the outrageous PVC pipes and plastic bottles sculpture that is able to “walk” like mammals with the help of the wind.
