Earlier in April, TheWrap reported that a sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s surprise hit “Kingsman: The Secret Service” is currently being developed by 20th Century Fox. The report came after Vaughn revealed in an interview with US Today that the 2nd “Kingsman” movie could be happening if the 1st film does well in America.
Well, it seemed like the film did really well in the States as the director, who recently invited Yahoo Movies to his house, finally confirmed that the sequel is indeed in the works.
Directed and co-written by Vaughn, “Kingsman: The Secret Service” is based on “The Secret Service”, a comic book created by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons. It starred Oscar-winner Colin Firth as a master secret spy who mentors street kid Gary Unwin aka “Eggsy” (played by Taron Egerton) into a super-secret spy organisation just as a global threat emerges form a twisted tech genius.
The movie received mainly positive reviews from critics and has grossed over $401 million at the global box office. It is also Vaughn’s most successful movie to date. Despite its success, many fans assumed that Vaughn won’t return to direct the 2nd film as he has a tendency of avoiding sequels.
But now, he’s going to break his “rule” for once as he confirmed with Yahoo that he’s currently writing the script for the “Kingsman” sequel.
When a fan asked via Yahoo whether he’ll return to the sequel, he said:
Well, the good news is that I’m writing it next door at the moment. If I think I can get the script good enough, then we are making it. So again, stay tuned, but we are doing our damndest to make that happen.
It is unclear whether the original cast members will also return, but Vaughn hinted that an American agent may appear in the sequel, which could be released in 2 years.
Vaughn is currently producing “Eddie the Eagle”, an upcoming British-American sports comedy drama film that stars Egerton and “X-Men” actor Hugh Jackman. He was recently lined up to direct the reboot of “Flash Gordon” for Fox. He is also developing “The Golden Age”, a film adaptation of a comic book about superheroes in a retirement home at 20th Century Fox.
“Kingsman: The Secret Service” is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.
