Whether we like it or not, images generated through artificial intelligence (AI) have become more common on social media. Understandably, this can cause numerous issues, particularly when the content features a famous individual.
Recently, a Twitter post went viral for calling out an Indonesian man for using AI to generate images of K-pop idols to promote his business. The post expressed disdain towards the man, Brillian Fairiandi, for using K-pop idols like aespa (에스파), BLACKPINK (블랙핑크) and Hearts2Hearts (하츠투하츠), likely without permission, and thus, infringing on copyright.

A look at Brillian’s Instagram account shows that he’s the founder and CEO of Imajik Group, a content creation company specialising in generative AI. While some netizens may have mixed feelings about the company and its purpose, many of the criticisms target Brillian’s specific use of K-pop idols in his content.
Ever since generative AI began growing in popularity amongst social media users, many K-pop fans have expressed disapproval of its usage. Besides copyright infringement, many argued that the generated content could result in slander for the idols if the images or videos depict them engaging in activities that may not be appropriate.

While Brillian’s generated AI images merely depict female idols in regular activities, such as playing sports, K-pop fans are still displeased with his content. As such, the fans have called for the idols’ respective agencies to take action against the CEO and other similar “AI creators”. Some also urged K-pop labels to be more strict with unauthorised use of their idols’ images.
On a similar note, there was recently outrage on social media over netizens using AI to “uncloth” female celebrities. Given such issues, it’s no surprise that the public is concerned about the usage of AI. Let’s hope that agencies will be more vigilant over this matter, but what are your thoughts on this?
