(UPDATE) Hype’s Must Watch: The Emoji Movie

Peeps, we finally have a first look of “The Emoji Movie”!

A sneak peek was released yesterday (Wednesday, 21st December), and true to its essence, it has been specially optimised for mobile users and is best viewed on phones.

Produced by Sony Animation, the movie will take place through some of the most popular and universally recognised smartphone apps, and is produced by Michelle Raimo Kouyate (“Puss In Boots”, “Silver Linings Playbook”). The idea was conceptualised around July 2015, but was met with mostly negative response. Despite everything, the producers have trudged ahead with their ideas.

The teaser trailer features the voice of Steven Wright as the “meh” emoji, who acts as the father of Gene in the movie. Aside from the bored-looking emoji, we also have our first look at how the ice cream, cookie, and poop emoji look like animated.

The official synopsis of the movie is as follows:

“‘Emojimovie: Express Yourself’ unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favourite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone’s user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression – except for Gene (played by T.J. Miller), an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions.

“Determined to become ‘normal’ like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Ilana Glazer). Together, they embark on an epic “app-venture” through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it’s deleted forever.”

UPDATE (17th May):

The 2nd trailer (above) for “The Emoji Movie” is out and we finally got to see “Logan” actor Sir Patrick Stewart’s Poop emoji in action. It also introduces other emoji such as Hi-5 (voiced by James Corden), Jailbreak (voiced by Ilana Glazer), and Smiler (voiced by Maya Rudolph).

While the newly-released clip seems entertaining enough, we’re not sure if it will appeal to older moviegoers. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

“The Emoji Movie” is slated for release on 4th August 2017.
