Caine is making a comeback! Lionsgate recently announced more projects to the “John Wick” universe, including the highly anticipated fifth movie and a spin-off about Donnie Yen’s (甄子丹) character Caine.
During the recent CinemaCon event in Las Vegas, Lionsgate announced that a “John Wick” spin-off movie about the blind assassin Caine is in the works. Adding to the excitement is that Donnie Yen is both reprising his role and directing the project. The movie will kickstart production in Hong Kong later this year. Screenwriter Mattson Tomlin also joins the project, contributing to the screenplay.
As for the plot, nothing much was revealed but the new feature will continue Caine’s story following the events in Chapter 4. There are also no details on who else will make an appearance. However, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson has talked about the project, saying, “From the moment Chad (Stahelski) and Donnie pitched the idea of a Donnie Yen-style action film in the mode of John Wick. I was all in.”.
Adam also praised the Hong Kong filmmaker, saying, “Donnie is not only an incredible, charismatic star, but a smart, cinematic director who knows how to deliver massively entertaining action for a global audience. We’re thrilled that he’s in the director’s chair to tell Caine’s story.”. The man behind the character is equally thrilled, sharing the news on Instagram with the captions, “I am ready John”.
Donnie added, “The John Wick films have set an immensely high standard for action filmmaking and I greatly appreciate Lionsgate giving me the opportunity to further elevate the franchise. I am both thrilled and deeply inspired to make this happen.”. This upcoming spin-off wouldn’t be Donnie’s first stint as a director, but it will be his first time helming a Hollywood blockbuster.
