Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television have officially locked in former WWE superstar and actor Dave Bautista to star as Kratos in their upcoming live-action TV series adaptation of the iconic video game franchise, God of War.
The casting decision represents a massive milestone for the high-profile Prime Video adaptation, bringing a proven action star with genuine dramatic chops to one of gaming’s most celebrated and visually imposing protagonists. Known for his breakout role as Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise as well as his roles in Dune and Blade Runner 2049.

Ryan Hurst, who was cast as Kratos in January 2026, had a torn bicep issue that required surgery, delaying the start of filming until 2027. It was first reported earlier this month that Bautista was in negotiations to portray the part.
The live-action television adaptation will focus directly on the Norse mythology era introduced in Santa Monica Studio’s critically acclaimed 2018 video game reset rather than the character’s original ancient Greek saga. The narrative follows Kratos, the infamous Ghost of Sparta, who has exiled himself from his blood-soaked past in Greece and resides in the realm of Midgard.
Following the death of his beloved wife Faye, Kratos and his young son, Atreus, set off on a dangerous journey across mythical realms to scatter her ashes from the highest peak in the nine realms. Along the way, father and son are forced to navigate their strained, distant relationship while battling formidable Norse gods, terrifying mythical beasts, and the lingering scars of Kratos’ violent former life.

The creative team steering the adaptation brings significant prestige and adaptation experience to the project. Ronald D. Moore, acclaimed showrunner known for his celebrated work on Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, and Apple TV+’s For All Mankind, serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the series. Cory Barlog, the creative director behind the 2018 God of War game, is also actively involved as an executive producer alongside Santa Monica Studio’s Yumi Yang, ensuring the TV series preserves the deep lore, emotional weight, and narrative integrity that made the gaming franchise a global phenomenon.
Bautista expressed immense enthusiasm for tackling the physically demanding and emotionally complex role, praising the writing team’s nuanced approach to Kratos’ journey of fatherhood and redemption. Production on the first season is slated to begin filming early next year in Vancouver, with executive producers promising a massive visual scale, practical stunts, and state-of-the-art special effects to bring the nine realms of Norse mythology to life. Fans can expect further casting announcements regarding Atreus, Freya, and Baldur in the coming months as Amazon continues pre-production preparations for its flagship fantasy epic.
