Say it once, it won’t happen. Say it twice, you might just get a feeling that it’s coming. Say it thrice? You’re totally getting it!
That’s right, “Beetlejuice” fans. All you need is a little patience and perhaps chant the name of the movie 3 times to see Michael Keaton return to reprise his role as Betelgeuse (better known as Beetlejuice) in the sequel of Tim Burton‘s “Beetlejuice”!
Winona Ryder, who starred in the said movie as Lydia, confirmed the report in the latest episode of “Late Night with Seth Meyers”. But because there has been no official report about “Beetlejuice 2”, she carefully answered, “I think I can confirm it“.
Winona also added:
It was very hush-hush top secret … but then (Tim Burton) was doing some press for “Big Eyes” and and he did an on-camera interview and he said, “Oh yeah, we’re doing it, and Winona’s going to be in it.” … If he said it, I can say it.
However, further details are being kept under wraps as she later said, “I really don’t know much more than anybody.”
Back in February 2014, Keaton told MTV that he will return to the sequel if Burton is directing it. The “Birdman” actor later offered an update to MTV, saying that there’s no script for the sequel yet. However, writer Seth Grahame-Smith was working hard on it.
While promoting his latest film “Big Eyes”, Burton confirmed to IGN that the “Beetlejuice” sequel was already in the works and it was written with Keaton in mind. He said, “There’s only one Betelgeuse, and that’s Michael. There is a script, and I would love to work with him again. I think there is now a better chance than ever.”
Burton added:
I miss that character. There’s something that’s cathartic and amazing about it. I think it’s closer than ever.
Though Warner Bros. has yet to officially greenlight the sequel, fans of the cult classic can definitely expect to see the original cast members returning to reprise their respective roles. After all, Ryder wasn’t the only actor to confirm that the sequel is indeed a go.
