During the month of Ramadan, it’s uncommon to see Muslim customers dining in public during the daytime. However, most would mind their own business if they do come across those who have chosen to skip fasting.

That said, every Ramadan, there is always a debate about whether people—regardless of their religion—should eat in public during the fasting month as a sign of respect for those who are fasting. This uncle decided to cause a scene after seeing a young man eating at a convenience store despite being informed that he was not a Muslim. Here’s what happened:

Over the weekend, a netizen who goes by @/bingbinge656 on Twitter or Elijah, shared a confrontational encounter with a man who allegedly hit him for eating in public. The young Twitter user explained that he was eating at the FamilyMart outlet in Angsana Mall, Johor Bahru, when an older man, whom he described as ‘uncle’ approached and asked if he was Chinese.

The UTM student, confirmed that he was, but the man demanded to see his identity card (IC). The student refused, explaining that he had been advised not to show his IC to strangers, especially those who do not have legal authority. This unexpectedly further angered the man, who asked if Elijah was Muslim and demanded an explanation for why he was eating in public during Ramadan.

“I’m not even Muslim, and I didn’t do anything to provoke him, but he hit me a few times. Thankfully, his child was kind enough to apologise to me on his behalf,” the netizen wrote. The Sarawakian man stated that, although he can accept the apology from the uncle’s family, he will not tolerate physical assault in public. Shortly after sharing his experience, the post went viral, with netizens rallying in Elijah’s defence.

Many condemned the elder man’s actions, reminding others that Ramadan is also about practicing patience and resisting temptation. Others questioned why the uncle was at a FamilyMart outlet during fasting hours in the first place. According to Aaron Ago Dagang, Minister of National Unity of Malaysia, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) are currently investigating the incident after a police report was filed.

Here are the videos of the incident below:

Kes di Family Mart Angsana Mall, Johor Bahru:

Saya hanya makan secara biasa dan pak cik tu tanya saya orang Cina ke tak. Saya jawab ya sebab itu soalan biasa. Lepas tu dia nak saya tunjukkan IC saya walaupun kita tak boleh tunjuk IC kepada orang yang tidak dikenali.
