Back in October, SM Entertainment announced the departure of RIIZE (라이즈) member Seunghan (승한) due to ongoing backlash towards the 21-year-old for his past actions. The move had many fans, particularly those who supported Seunghan, calling out the company for siding with those who “bullied” the young singer to end his career with the K-pop group.
While Seunghan left his group, he remained signed to SM Entertainment, and earlier today (15th November 2024, Friday), the company shared an update on the idol’s solo endeavours. According to the announcement, Seunghan is preparing to debut as a solo artist in the second half of 2025. As part of his solo career, the singer will also launch official social accounts to provide updates on his activities.

While a solo debut would typically excite fans, SM Entertainment’s announcement received a lot of backlash. Many BRIIZE (RIIZE fans) called the company out for its refusal to take action against ongoing attacks towards Seunghan while trying to capitalise on fans’ support for him. Others argued that Seunghan should be allowed to rejoin his former group instead of being given a solo debut as “compensation”.
Many also noted how SM Entertainment provided a separate announcement in English, which is uncharacteristic of the company. Many suggest the agency hopes the announcement will attract foreign fans who have been vocally supporting Seunghan since his dismissal while continuing to ignore their demands. Others also argue that the singer making a solo debut may be more detrimental to his mental health, given how netizens treated him while he was in RIIZE.

On the other hand, some fans voiced support for Seunghan, saying they look forward to seeing him back on stage. Only time will tell what the reaction to his solo debut would be like, but what are your thoughts on this? Is SM Entertainment trying to please Seunghan’s fans? Or is this just an easy cop-out from taking responsibility?
