Fans of Mandopop superstar Jay Chou (周杰伦) would know that one of the selling points of his sold-out concerts is that he often interacts with the crowd. The star would also perform an impromptu duet of one of his songs chosen by a lucky fan. However, his recent interaction with a fan in Singapore wasn’t well received.
The Taiwanese singer recently performed in Singapore as part of his Carnival World Tour (嘉年華世界巡迴演唱會). On the last night of his three-day stop, Jay picked a female fan from Singapore to request a song and sing a duet with him. Since the woman introduced herself as a longtime fan of the musician, Jay jokingly asked the fan not to choose an old song as they might not be popular. However, to the surprise of many, the fan requested Jolin Tsai’s (蔡依林) “Say Love You (说爱你)”.

While the song is Jolin’s, “Say Love You” was composed by Jay, so the song is technically his. However, the fan’s choice didn’t sit well with other fans because there were rumours that the two singers once dated. Since Jay is now married, many argued that it was inappropriate for the fan to ask him to sing a song from his rumoured ex-girlfriend.
Jay didn’t end up singing with the Singaporean fan because his attention shifted to a nearby fan. The woman in pink, who was screaming and crying incessantly, ended up singing with him a duet of his 2008 song, ‘Give Me The Time Of A Song (给我一首歌的时间)”. Unfortunately for the Singaporean, Jay never got to sing with her. However, it’s unsure whether he had forgotten or intentionally skipped her because of her song request.

Despite the criticism, some netizens felt sorry for the Singaporean fan since someone stole her spotlight. Jay Chou will perform in National Stadium Bukit Jalil on 26th October, so perhaps this is a good reminder to prepare your song choice in case you get chosen by the superstar for a duet.
