What do you look forward to do during Chinese New Year? For most, it’s reconnecting with friends and relatives from near and far. Many long to spend quality time with loved ones – including us. Whether it’s through several sessions of mahjong or food, social activities are usually high on the list. Well, LEGO is inviting everyone to build loooong-lasting memories with their exciting LEGO festive sets.
In celebration of the Year of the Dragon, The LEGO Group has introduced 2 brand new festive releases – 80112 LEGO Spring Festival Auspicious Dragon and 80113 LEGO Spring Festival Family Reunion Celebration.
80112 LEGO Spring Festival Auspicious Dragon
Out of all the new releases in 2024 so far, the Auspicious Dragon LEGO is by far the most impressive one. Reflecting the Wood Dragon, you’ll find this majestic creature perched on top of a rock formation surrounded by water. Having said that, since dragons are normally high up in the sky, the blue legos could represent the atmosphere and the white “waves” are the clouds. Hence, the dragon is likely resting atop the crest of a mountain. The blue ball in its grasp is a Pearl of Wisdom, which is commonly found on most East Asian dragon to represent power, wisdom, and prosperity.
The printed inscription of 祥龍納福 “Xiáng lóng nàfú” means “Auspicious Dragon Brings Blessings”. When you break them apart, “祥龍” means an auspicious or fortunate dragon, symbolizing luck and prosperity. “納福” conveys the idea of absorbing blessings, bringing happiness and good fortune.
The description on the Auspicious Dragon’s significance (together with the beautiful illustration) is a good way to spark family conversations while sinking your teeth into this LEGO activity. While the Spring Festival Auspicious Dragon is definitely a set up from previous editions, perhaps LEGO could consider adding more movement to future zodiac LEGOs as this dragon’s body is pretty much locked in place except for its mouth.
80113 LEGO Spring Festival Family Reunion Celebration
Lunar New Year sets are always super impressive because they come with many mini figures – this particular set has 13 mini figures. Each of them has a distinct characteristic and accessories (e.g.: mobile phone, flowers, teapot, camera – our favourite is the LEGO performer with the dragon headpiece aka dragon mascot).
Delving into the 13 mini figures, you’ve got a team of chefs in their work attire, restaurant patrons, family members (grandparents, parents + children), and other supporting characters (like the chick in black leather jacket with a selfie stick).
Instead of another typical home reunion, LEGO took another route and gave fans a full blown restaurant. The 80113 LEGO Spring Festival Family Reunion Celebration set has a few layers – or rather storeys – to this restaurant building.
On the ground floor, you’ve got a reception desk which is accessible from behind a removable panel. Next to it is the hallway which connects to the stairway upstairs and also the kitchen (where the cooking takes place).
Meanwhile, upstairs on the first floor sits the main dining room with a table of six. Although there’s no “lou sang” happening, you could get creative with the placement of mini figures where a chef is serving the family dishes for their reunion dinner. There’s also a cute restroom situated next to it.
On the rooftop is where the lovey-dovey romance happens. A couple could be enjoying a romantic meal here thanks to the nice ambience and red lanterns to set the festive mood. Complete this reunion LEGO set by including the flower shop, street food cart and dim sum toy cart outside the restaurant.
