When it comes to e-hailing services, some people have complained about their drivers’ behaviour while the drivers themselves have shared stories about their unusual experiences of sending their customers to their destinations. When it comes to fares, most would avoid booking an e-hailing ride during peak hours since they’re more expensive than usual.
However, this customer was not satisfied with their recent experience of booking a ride. They believe that this e-hailing service is manipulating the fares after noticing that their usual cheap journey surged to an unreasonable price. Here’s what happened:
Yesterday (Monday, 22nd January), a netizen who goes by @/eKharus posted a screenshot of the Grab fare that they recently booked, claiming that the company is manipulating the fares. “This is a 10km route that usually costs RM17. Grab has somewhat of a monopoly, so they can surge charge however they like,” they wrote. The user also added the route they were taking had no feasible transportation.
Imagine what would happen if they bought FoodPanda’s business.” As seen in the screenshot above, the fare for a regular ride went up to RM44 for a 10km journey. The post quickly went viral with netizens discussing the issue. Some believed that there was no use in demanding Grab to decrease their prices saying that the government should provide more access to public transportation.
Others speculated that the fare surge was due to peak hours (judging by the red arrows in the photo) or the drivers rejecting the original fare for the journey as it was not worth their time and energy. Of course, there were also those who agreed with the uploader saying that e-hailing services have gotten more expensive and unreliable over time.
@/eKharus did not update whether or not they have brought this issue up with Grab themselves but there’s no way to be certain if the e-hailing company has been made aware of people’s complaints until they officially address it. What do you think about the discussion?
