Yesterday (Thursday, 11th January), was finally the day Prince Mateen of Brunei and Dayang Anisha Rosnah Adam (Anisha Isa-Kalebic) officially wed and registered as husband and wife. A video of Prince Mateen speaking during the solemnisation ceremony went viral online and many commented on his accent.
However, that wasn’t the only thing that was discussed among netizens. Apart from hearing His Royal Highness’s speaking voice, many were wondering about the currency of the dowry as they heard the young Prince say Ringgit instead of Dollar.

In the same video that went viral, Prince Mateen can be heard saying that he accepts his bride Anisha with a dowry of 1000 Ringgit. This has left Malaysian netizens confused as many wondered if the 32-year-old meant Malaysian Ringgit (RM) instead of his country’s official currency Brunei Dollar (B$). The comments sections on TikTok as well as the Quotes on Twitter were all flooded by the same questions.
Thankfully, some replied to those comments and offered to clear up the confusion. For your information, the reason why His Royal Highness said Ringgit instead of Dollar was because Brunei actually uses Ringgit to refer to the currency in Malay and Dollar to refer to it in English. After a quick search, we can confirm that the word Ringgit is written on the front of the cash while the word Dollar is written on the back.
Have you always known about Brunei’s currency or is this brand new information to you? Regardless, we have to give thanks to the Royal couple for making everyone more aware of the differences.
