We’re barely a week into the new year – but many women are already sharing their experiences of getting sexually harassed by men on social media. After exposing a married man for sending her sexual comments, a woman started getting messages from other women who were also sexually harassed by the same man.
Local entrepreneur Shira Shariff first exposed the married man, Muhammad Afiq, for sending her sexually charged messages through her Instagram account. She then shared the post on her Twitter, only intending to share about her unfortunate online interactions since the start of the new year. Shockingly, the tweet revealed more about Afiq’s terrible behaviour as more women started sharing their experiences of getting sexually harassed by Afiq on both Instagram and Twitter.
According to several tweets, Afiq is a school teacher who moonlights as a fitness influencer. Many of his female followers, who followed him for fitness advice, revealed that he would send explicit messages to them. Some women even claimed to have received nude images, explicit videos, and messages asking for sexual favours. Besides the sexual harassment claims, some women also said that Afiq would share gory and violent posts on social media, which they say is disturbing behaviour for a teacher.
Many netizens have reacted to the tweets, condemning Afiq for his perverse behaviour. Netizens also said they’re worried for his students, even tagging the Ministry of Education to investigate the claims. Some netizens also thanked Shira and the other women for exposing Afiq, saying that more people should publicly shame men who sexually harass women on social media. However, some netizens slammed Shira for her tweet, saying it was unnecessary to reveal Afiq’s messages as it could affect his wife and those around him.
After posting the thread, Shira revealed that Afiq had approached her to apologise for his comments and requested to take down her posts. He has since deactivated his social media accounts – but many are hoping that the thread will stay on Twitter to serve as a lesson for him.
