When international celebrities visit our country, Malaysians are always eager to know what’s their favourite food and places to visit. Well, it’s not public figures but tourists and expatriates as well. There have been many anecdotes from foreigners who have visited – or lived – in Malaysia, including this Polish woman named Agata Bas.

As an expatriate from Poland who has lived in Malaysia for seven years, Agata has many experiences with Malaysians. In a recent interview with content creator Max Chernov, known for his videos about expatriates living in Malaysia and Singapore, she spoke fondly about her experience living here. Amongst the things she talked about was the kindness of Malaysians, what she enjoys about Malaysia and the differences between Malaysia and Poland.

Agata first talked about the kindness of Malaysians, reminiscing about the time a taxi driver helped locate her house. She recalled that he did not ask for extra fare even after driving around to help her search for the exact location. His selflessness and genuine care took her by surprise. Agata also talked about her love for Malaysian food, sharing that she started bringing sambal when she travels to Europe. This is because the food in Malaysia is more intense in flavours when compared to Polish food, which is heavier on potatoes and flour, so after a few days without spice, Agata said you’ll start craving it.

According to Agata, the best part of Malaysia is the people. She said it is easy to befriend people here as the locals love chatting and are open to having small talk, which contrasts with the Poles, who may find it weird to start a conversation with a random stranger. She said that most locals are chill and friendly, making it difficult to get angry because everyone here is happy.

In Poland, according to her, people tend to be more tense and stressed out so you would typically avoid unnecessary interactions. In the video, Agata also talked about the cultural gap between her and her Malaysian boyfriend and the differences between Malaysia and her home country, like digital connectivity and convenience in delivery services.

She also briefly touched on her favourite places to visit in Kuala Lumpur and obtaining a permanent residence in Malaysia. Hearing Agata share her experience and insight was refreshing – and we’re glad she’s enjoyed her stay here so far.
