Have you ever gotten into a taxi or an e-hailing car and had an interesting conversation with the driver about your race, religion, field of study, or career? Unfortunately, there is no escaping them sometimes, but they can be an interesting story to share with your friends later.
Some drivers mean no harm as they’re just being friendly or genuinely curious to know more about their passenger. However, it can get pretty tiring to be stereotyped based on who you are. Take, for instance, this British man who claimed that every taxi driver in Malaysia always associated him with one thing.

VeggiesOnTour is a travelling content creator duo. The English-Italian couple, Pat and Giulia have been regularly posting videos of their experiences in Malaysia since January of this year. Pat, who is from England recently posted a TikTok video where he shared his experience with Malaysian taxi drivers who always associated him with the Premier League simply because of his country of origin.
“I swear, every time I get into a taxi in Malaysia and they find out that I’m from England, they’ll be like, ‘Oh England! Premier League, Harry Kane, Liverpool, Manchester [United]!'” said the TikToker. Amused by these alleged encounters, the traveller made the assumption that every taxi driver in Malaysia is probably a Premier League fan. The video has so far reached over 32.6k views and 1.5k likes at the time of writing.
Malaysian netizens responded to the viral video with many agreeing that Malaysians are huge Football fans in general. Some assumed that the drivers just wanted to strike up a friendly conversation with the travelling vlogger. Others joked about how the British man should be grateful that the drivers did not make any other stereotypical assumptions about him.
From his replies to the comments, we can assume that Pat had no ill intention of posting the video and just wanted to share his experience with his followers but we can all also agree that being stereotyped too often can be quite exhausting. We hope that both Pat and Giulia will continue to have a wonderful time here in Malaysia.
