The Malaysian pride continues! It’s only been a day since Michelle Yeoh (楊紫瓊) won her first Oscar. But, Malaysians everywhere are still celebrating— understandably so. After all, Tan Sri Dato Michelle Yeoh will go down in history as the first Asian and Malaysian-born actress to win an Academy Award!
Like many others, local singer-songwriter Namewee (黃明志) has been extremely excited for our talented actress. In fact, he even shared a fond memory he had of Michelle!

Namewee uploaded a post congratulating Michelle on her win yesterday (13th March) on his socials. “As a Malaysian who has also working overseas for so many years, I was really touched to see her get Oscar finally! Malaysia boleh!”, he added. “It’s really not easy to be the first Asian (to win Best Actress in the Oscar Awards).”
The singer also praised Michelle for mentioning Malaysia and Hong Kong during her speech. It seems he was impressed by Michelle’s humbleness. As it turns out, that wasn’t the only time Michelle had demonstrated humility despite her status as a renown actress.

“The fact that she took the initiative to come over and ask to take a photo with me that day for her nephew is enough for me to brag (about) for a lifetime,” he reminisced. Namewee also promised to make a video to share the incident in full later. The songwriter shared the memorable incident had taken place in 2013 during the Sarawak Southeast Asian Film Festival. However, one fan did ask why he looked terrified of her in the photo!

Unsurprisingly, Namewee also took the opportunity to remind Chinese netizens that Michelle wasn’t from China. “She’s not Wuhan,” he firmly stated. He wasn’t the only one who felt it was necessary to do so. Hong Kong actor Chapman To did the same!
Well, we have a feeling many Malaysians will still be lauding her success for a while longer. However, do remember that her success does not mean we get a public holiday. The government has already debunked that.
