Tan Sri Dato Michelle Yeoh (楊紫瓊) made history as the first Malaysian to bag the Best Actress award at the Oscars. Since then, Malaysians have taken to social media to rave about the news.
There were also those who were wondering whether the government would declare a public holiday to mark the Ipoh-born actress’ historic achievement. It didn’t take too long before “reports” emerged that Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, would be declaring this Wednesday (15th March) as a holiday. Turns out, the news was fake!

Taking to its official Facebook page, the Prime Minister’s Department clarified that the information provided in a screenshot from The Star article, titled “PM Anwar declares public holiday on Wednesday. This is the pride of a nation!'” was false. “The public is urged to not spread or share unverified or fake news. If you’re unsure, don’t share.”
Star Media Group Bhd, the owner of the publication also came forth to shed some light on the report. “It has come to the company’s attention that a picture, depicting a manipulated image which misuses The Star’s identity, is making the rounds on social media. This is a misrepresentation of The Star’s actual news coverage,” the company revealed in their statement.
Hopefully the explanation helps.
