The Academy Awards aired earlier today (Monday, 13th March) and Malaysians everywhere were glued to their seats and screens waiting for the winner of the Actress in a Leading Role category to be announced.
Attending the Oscars Viewing Party at Dadi Cinema, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur was Tan Sri Dato Michelle Yeoh’s loved ones alongside politicians Nancy Shukri and Hannah Yeoh and hearts were pounding all around as the moment for the much-anticipated category was finally being presented.
And the Oscar goes to…..Michelle Yeoh for “Everything Everywhere All At Once”! The atmosphere at the Oscar Viewing Party erupted in cheers as Oscar winners Jessica Chastain and Halle Berry announced our very own Malaysian icon as the Best Actress winner.
In our video above, the actress’s mother Janet, family members, and the audience couldn’t contain their excitement as they joyfully reacted to the historic win! Loud cheers can be heard from all corners of the venue and we can’t lie, we probably lost our voices as well from screaming along with the crowd.
The 60-year-old made history once again for being the first Asian and Malaysian-born actress to win an Academy Award! “For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof that dreams do come true, and ladies never let anyone tell you, you’re ever past your prime!” said the Oscar winner during her emotional speech.

After thanking everyone involved in “Everything Everywhere All At Once”, Michelle Yeoh dedicated her Oscar win to her mother and thanked all her loved ones for their support throughout her career. “[My mother] is watching right now in Malaysia with my family and friends. I’m bringing this [award] home to you guys!”.
The new Oscar winner also made it her priority to video call mommy dearest to celebrate the momentous occasion. Michelle was seen holding her golden statue in one hand and blowing flying kisses to the camera.

“Everything Everywhere All At Once” won a total of 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), and Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis)!
