Foreign Man Gets Flak For Claiming Nasi Lemak In Kampung Baru Is “Sedap Gila”

Over the years, we’ve heard some stories of foreigners tasting and giving their opinions on one of Malaysia’s most iconic dishes, nasi lemak. Who can forget the British man who defended the national food when another fellow UK native declared that she wasn’t a fan of the dish?

Fortunately (for her), the British woman changed her mind after trying a proper and more delicious version of nasi lemak. This businessman recently shared his excitement about eating the iconic local dish at a specific restaurant but netizens don’t seem to agree with his opinion.

Oliver Woods, founder of Beer Asia, posted two photos on his Twitter earlier this week to share that he went to eat the national dish at Nasi Lemak Wanjo Kampung Baru restaurant in Kuala Lumpur. “Nasi Lemak Wanjo Kg Baru for the first time in years. Sedap gila!” he captioned the post. In one of the photos, the marketing strategist shared the dish that he ate at the restaurant.

The Tweet received over 1.7 million views, nearly 500 likes, and 200 quote tweets at the time of writing. While the entrepreneur’s intention was to just share his excitement, many Malaysian netizens did not seem to agree that the nasi lemak he had was “sedap gila”. Most responded to the tweet saying the restaurant’s food is not that good and that it was overhyped.

Others even accused the foreigner of being a clout chaser. There were also a few positive comments where netizens recommended the Caucasian man some (better) restaurants that sell nasi lemak. Thankfully, Oliver did not take any of the negative replies to heart and respected everyone’s opinions. The business owner even replied to some netizens to thank them for their recommendations.

We’re glad that Oliver didn’t take the criticism to heart. Hopefully he will get to try all the places that were recommended to him whenever he’s craving nasi lemak. What are some of your favourite places to buy and eat nasi lemak?
