Written and helmed by Edgar Wright (from “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”), “Baby Driver” is the heist comedy/musical you’ve always wanted.
The movie made its premiere at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival recently and so far, critics have nothing but praise for Wright’s first directorial effort in 4 years.
“Baby Driver” centres on Baby (played by Ansel Elgort), a young man who works as a getaway driver for a local crime boss named Doc (played by Kevin Spacey) and his crew. Due to a tragic car accident many years ago, Baby relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to drown out the “hum in the (ear)drum”.
When he meets the girl of his dreams, Deborah (played by Lily James), he sees a chance to ditch his criminal life. But making a clean getaway doesn’t come easy. He must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love, and freedom.
In speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Wright said that he always wanted to do a music-fuelled action movie. He explained, “It’s something that’s very much a part of my previous films and I thought of this idea of how to take that a stage further by having a character who listens to music the entire time. So, you have this young getaway driver who has to soundtrack his entire existence, particularly the bank robberies and fast getaways that come afterwards.”
In the international trailer, which was released by Sony earlier today (Monday, 13th March), Deborah is seen flirting with Baby in the diner she works in. When asked about his job, he tells her that he is a driver. Then, the next few scenes focus on the rest of Doc’s crime crew. This includes Bats (played by Jamie Foxx), Griff (played by Jon Bernthal), Darling (played by Eiza Gonzalez), and Buddy (played by Jon Hamm).
And of course, the clip features some pretty epic car chases.
