Many fans have lashed out at Lifetime after Britney Spears’ unofficial biopic was aired over the weekend.
The movie suggested that the pop star and her former boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, had a sex tape. This was just one of the many head-scratching moments during the 2-hour-long premiere on the TV network.
The majority of the film was focused on Spears (played by Australian actress Natasha Bassett) and Timberlake’s (played by rising star Nathan Keyes) relationship. Although the couple were not shown making the alleged sex tape, it is referred to during a beach house scene when Timberlake realises that their tape was stolen.
Of course, there has never been any reports of an alleged stolen sex tape. Lifetime even released a disclaimer, saying that although “Britney Ever After” is “based on a true story, some characters are fictionalised composites, and some events have been compressed, reorganised or fictionalised for purposes of dramatisation”.
Another disappointing factor about “Britney Ever After” was the fact that there was not one single Britney Spears song throughout the duration of the movie. This was because Lifetime did not obtain any rights to the singer’s discography.
Those hoping to relive Spears’ “…Baby One More Time” or the iconic “I’m a Slave 4 U” performance were left saddened. The only performances shown were her cover versions of The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” as well as Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ “I Love Rock N’ Roll”.
Spears and Timberlake’s eventual breakup was portrayed as the reason to her downward spiral and questionable choices including her infamous head-shave (through a flashback scene), the decision to elope with her childhood sweetheart Jason Alexander, and her marriage to backup dancer Kevin Federline.
Fans (and other celebrities) who were left unimpressed, took to social media to vent their frustration of the inaccurate depiction of their favourite pop superstar.

It's really sad that Lifetime is making this entire movie about Britney chasing men. Not about her music or her career #BritneyEverAfter pic.twitter.com/Ujmo09o1uG

“Britney Ever After”, however, ends on a happy note with Spears overcoming her inner demons and moving on to her successful Las Vegas residency.
