Known as the first apparel consultancy service in Malaysia, SaltyCustoms started in 2010 when two friends, Shannon Toh and King discovered their shared passion for well-fitted, high quality t-shirts. However, taking customised t-shirts to a whole new level, SaltyCustoms also focuses on providing clients with a well-rounded t-shirt customising experience that has redefined the t-shirt industry.
Last weekend, SaltyCustoms launched the 11/10 Experience with SaltyCustoms to celebrate its status as Malaysia’s first Apparel Consultancy Service in Malaysia. The celebration which took place at SaltyCustoms’ office, The Academy, was attended by members of the media, VIP guests, clients and friends. Guests of course were also treated to a night of fun and entertainment with a demonstration of Do It Yourself (DIY) t-shirt screen printing booths, a scrumptious buffet dinner, free flow of beers and cocktails before taking the night to the SaltyCustoms Experience Party which featured entertainment by local band Paperplane Pursuit and artiste Darren Ashley.
Hype.My managed to sneak in a quick chat with the Founders of Salty Customs, Shannon Toh and King.
How did you come up with the name SaltyCustoms?
Shannon: I used to draw a lot of comics and cartoons during my high school years and most of it featured a character called the Saltydogg. So when naming the business came along, we decided to go with keeping the intriguing word Salty and Customs because what better way to define our business and hence SaltyCustoms.
Is there a minimum order when it comes to placing an order?
Yes, at the moment we accept orders starting with a minimum of ten t-shirts and there is no limit as to how many t-shirts can be ordered within per order.
Have you received any unusual or unique requests?
Oh we have actually. The most unique request we’ve received was one that wanted us to print certain amount of words (five) on the calves of the shirts in a limited amount of time. The printing of those words on the calves would have required machinery works and time so unfortunately we had to turn the request down as the time frame that the client wanted it in was a tad too short.
What else is included in SaltyCustoms’ products?
Apart from t-shirts, SaltyCustoms also provides customised Polos and microfibre jerseys. We don’t provide shirts because we focus on quality and fits. The t-shirts that SaltyCustoms’ provide are all designed to fit perfectly and the perfect fit was developed through our many years of researched.
What kind of clients do your target – brands, agencies, vendors?
All sorts actually. To date our clients include AirAsia, Groupon, Heineken, Universal Music Malaysia, Monsoon Cup, Chatime, Barbie Live, Topman, GAP, Zalora and Astro Supersport. We also did a collaboration with 100 Plus on The 100 Plus On The Move – Dato’ Lee Chong Wei Promotion which featured our signature SaltyCustoms fits.
Where do you get your inspirations from?
Anywhere actually. We look around the office to conjure up ideas, visit a number of websites for the latest updates on things, brain storming sessions amongst colleagues so yeah, pretty much everything can be an inspiration to us.
